Ships have been a reoccurring theme in Lothar's work. The most recent was the series "Waterline", responding to the threat of global warming while looking at historical precedence in the great flood.
Babel
2016
The Babel series celebrates the vibrant culture in places of diversity. It argues that the different languages and with it the wide range of philosophies, religion and word views was a gift rather than a punishment. The tower was constructed from Books found on the streets of Brooklyn in at least 25 different languages.
Yesterday's Cities

Looking at New York though immigrants eyes, these are images of an idealized New York as imagined from afar. The city as a mix between old world nostalgia and new world possibilities.

An homage to Giovanni Battista Piranesi's imaginary prison series as imagined by Osterburg. It celebrates the continuity of an artistic idea in the creation of multiple states of an etching plate or video.
